Lens INDEX Guide
🔍 What Is Lens Index?
The lens index (1.50, 1.56, 1.59, 1.60, 1.67, 1.74) indicates how thin and lightweight a lens is. Higher index = thinner lenses.
🧮 Recommended Lens Index by Power Range
Power Range (SPH) | Suggested Lens Index | Lens Type | Why? |
---|---|---|---|
0 to ±1.00 | 1.50 / 1.56 | Budget / Single Vision | Standard thickness, affordable |
±1.00 to ±2.00 | 1.56 or 1.59 | Single Vision / Blue Cut | Slightly thinner, better aesthetics |
±2.00 to ±4.00 | 1.60 | All types | Good balance of thickness & cost |
±4.00 to ±6.00 | 1.67 | Progressive/Bifocal | Thin, light, reduces edge thickness |
±6.00 and above | 1.74 | All types | Ultra-thin, best for high prescriptions |
🎯 Other Factors to Consider
-
Pupillary Distance (PD) and frame size also affect final lens thickness.
-
Material preferences:
-
Polycarbonate (1.59) is impact-resistant, great for kids.
-
1.60 & above are high-index, lightweight for rimless or thin frames.
-
-
Coatings: Blue light, anti-glare, hydrophobic, UV are mostly available across indexes.
✅ Practical Use
-
"We recommend 1.60 thin lenses for most prescriptions, which balances comfort and clarity."
-
"With higher powers, 1.67 or 1.74 ultra-thin lenses will reduce weight and distortion."
